Concussion protocols

Post by Docger »

Not sure what the protocols being used are when a wrestler goes into a back area for evaluation .
Abbott has developed point of care tests which measure protein bio markers released into the blood stream following a trauma to the brain. The first such test approved by the FDA in 2021 requires plasma which meant that a blood sample required a centrifuge to separate plasma from whole blood to be placed in the test tube. I do not think the back rooms in the wrestling halls have centrifuges but of course not sure.
Most recently the FDA has approved a whole blood test ( Alinity) to test for bio markers eliminating the need for a centrifuge. These tests are quite sensitive and supposedly eliminate a need for a CT scan. Whether they will predict a return to the mat of an ongoing match will likely not overrule physical and mental evaluation .
Interesting to see how it shakes out, I just keep thinking of Ramirez who leads with his head and gets thumped quite often.
