Rankings 23-24

Post by ugarles »

Intermat's preseason rankings are out. Team is #4 for tournament, #2 for duals.

125: 10 Ungar
133: 01 Vito
141: 14 Cornella
149: UR Shapiro (rly? there are 3 frosh on the list and he went 15-0 as a greyshirt at SCRTC not to mention freestyle)
157: UR Handlovic? Saunders? idk
165: 07 Ramirez
174: 02 Foca (Griffith bumped up and is at #4. Interesting.)
184: 08 Loew (welcome back buddy)
197: 06 Cardenas
285: 11 Fernandes (welcome back buddy)

I'll put together the full chart once everyone has rankings out. 5 in the top 8 and 8 in the top 15 is incredible, especially since you can add Shapiro to that list too.

I think you'll see Shapiro at 157. Flo had him ranked at 149 a few weeks ago but bumped him to 157 in their latest version. Seems they know something. I'm guessing Saunders at 149.

That is one hell of a lineup. If everyone stays healthy, they will put up a crazy number of points in duals and tournaments.

I’m not worried about Shapiro. He’ll be right up there the week after his first official college matches.

i saw that too and was coming back to post it. also assume saunders at 149. Flo provisionally has Shapiro at 20, which is kind of their ranking philosophy, but i think they know better in their hearts.

Full strength Loew is a top 3 talent .
Saunders could surprise some people , he is very good .
Fernandes hasn't had a lot of matches to get in a groove and has a huge upside as well .

Preseason Rankings

Code: Select all

		WIN	Flo	Intermat WrestleStat (ELO)
125: Ungar xx 7	10 9
133: Arujau	xx 1 1 1
141: Cornella	xx	11	14 18
149: ???	xx	NR	NR ??
157: Shapiro	xx	24	NR 206
165: Ramirez	xx 7 7 5
174: Foca	xx 2 2 2
184: Loew	xx	16 8 10
197: Cardenas	xx 7 6 9
285: Fernandes	xx	11	11 16
TEAM DUAL:	xx	xx 2 8
TEAM NCAA:	xx 5 4 8
Wrestlestat also has Shapiro at 157 and lists Handlovic as the starter at 149 and Saunders backing up Cornella. I'm just leaving it blank for now since whoever we start will have to earn their way in to the rankings.

Still question marks are little D, Yapujian, McClenahan for the major foes. I suspect some backups will see action vs the weaker foes.

WIN leaving Ungar out of the top 20 is inexplicable imo. Most of the movement from Flo is from clarification on wrestlers' weights (at Cornell or elsewhere) or announcing redshirts. I don't know why McKiernan dropped out of the rankings at 285.

Leaving 149 blank because we don't have anyone ranked and the season will shake out the starter. The rest of the starters are pretty much known. Subject to change, of course, but ... 125 is the only weight with a real challenger and I'm not sure how real that challenge is with Ungar coming within seconds of AA.

Don't count out Greg D.

I think this is the last match Greg D. wrestled (U20 World Junior Team Trials), in which he beat Ryan Miller 10-0 for 3rd place. He looked really good doing it, with a head pinch and two chest wraps (one really big one). He lost in the semis 3-3 on criteria to 2023 NCAA 4th place Noto from Lock Haven. Looked better than he did all season before that. Yes, I know it is freestyle.

I wrote WIN an email. Leaving Ungar out is a joke when he beat their #3, #9, #20 last year and had 1 point losses to 4 of their other high ranked wrestlers. Not to mention a toe slide away from being an AA.

Then to rank Mesinbrink at 165 but not Shapiro at 157 , idk
