You apparently missed the meaning of the word "Open" in Clarion Open, Bearcat Open, and Mat Town Open.

Fine, but "Open" is generally not literal. It could be college open-- open to all college students. And if Kyle Dake or Nick Lee decided to enter, could they say, "Hey, it's open." Maybe, but I doubt it.

That's actually exactly what it means. Kyle or Nick Lee or even you could go an enter those tournaments.

"The Mat-Town Open is open to all wrestlers - Per NCAA DI rules for an event to be OPEN, collegiate wrestlers and non-collegiate wrestlers must have the opportunity to participate."

OK, so what's the implication? I would think that the very best high schoolers in any given year could do well at the Mat Town Open or the Clarion Open. Does that happen often? Did Dake compete is college opens as a high schooler? Or is this Shapiro kid off the charts?

The answer is that Dake could have competed at College Opens but spent his senior year being a normal kid in lansing 15 years ago or whatever. Shapiro is a Maryland kid who transferred to Wyoming Seminary and is now spending his senior year in Ithaca with SCRTC training and ... going to school locally? taking Khan Academy classes? remote learning with his Maryland high school? idk. So he's also competing in Opens.

There have actually been some problems with a couple of Wyoming Seminary Prep wrestlers and their Open results over the past few years. In both cases the WSP guys entered tournaments, but when the tournament results were uploaded to Track OPC the person doing the uploading attributed their results to wrestlers with similar names at the University of Wyoming (schools and wrestlers have to be selected from a menu, evidently). So a couple of guys who were 1,500 miles away were credited with results; and the opponents were credited with results against Div I wrestlers, not high school kids.

One instance involved Beau Bartlett of WSP and Tevis Bartlett of U of Wyoming.

Hopefully, that pull-down menu doesn't have Michigan State as "Spartans."

Since we know that HS wrestlers can participate in College level Open tournaments. I wonder if there is a limit on just how old they need to be. I ask because while Shapiro has been entering and handling the college competition, right with him in the rankings is HS sophomore, PJ Duke. While I recognize the safety concerns that go along with allowing for such an early inclusion, there's a selfish part of me that would love to see how he would fare.
